5 star rating: Highly Recommended September 2017

We had a very competent guide, Elena, who gave us a marvellous overview of the development of Russian art through the ages. Elena met us at our hotel and we walked to the museum, with her explaining various sights along the way with interesting snippets of history. After a quick visit to a souvenir shop and a stroll around the magnificent Church of the Saviour on Spilled Blood, we entered the superb Mikhailovsky Palace, the main museum building built in the Neoclassical style. Some of the rooms are still wonderfully opulent. I highly recommend a visit to this museum as it is not as crowded as the Hermitage and one can develop an insight into how art in this country changed from the initial Byantine-inspired icons to the grand landscape canvases. Particularly arresting was the portrait of Peter the Great on his deathbed. After the visit, Elena kindly guided us to the Fabergé museum and also gave us directions to reach our hotel by foot afterwards. I believe having a personal tour guide enables one to learn so much more about the country due to the anecdotal information one gleans. Not to be missed!
