Who would visit this place? Andrew Jackson has lost some of his populist luster recently as more information about his slave holding ways and Indian Removal scheme comes to our common attention. The tour of the Hermitage doesnt shy away from the discussion of his less enlightened and downright racist behaviors, but incorporates the information to create a fuller picture. Learning about the time, the place and the president was easy enough. Theres a movie to begin, exhibits in a very large hall, audio recordings on hand held devices, large sign posts along the trails and interpretive guides inside the house itself. The grounds are beautiful and well-tended and the graves of Jackson and his beloved Rachel in the garden are a lovely, contemplative ending to the tour. So who would visit? Id say anyone who wanted to learn more about this complicated and unpredictable man, who was most certainly a creature of his time. The tour takes about 3-4 hours and is mostly wheelchair accessible. Its worth an afternoons visit.

It was educational but not a must see

This tour was most interesting as it is Andrew Jackson's House, before and after he was president. The guides were most informative and helpful. They told his whole story, his successes and failures. It was most enjoyable.

Not enough knowledge

This was an awesome tour, though the day we did it, it was extremely hot. My headphones stopped working before we got to the house and we couldn't find anyone to fix them and they did not offer a refund. That would be my only complaint.

The guides at the Hermitage were knowledgeable and engaging, although the slavery issue was not given much mention. Despite the cold and rain, the garden still looked lovely. The drive into the Visitor Center gives you a good idea of the expanse of the original plantation. Included in the Visitor Center is a film depicting Jackson's life and a small museum with artifacts. From the Visitor Center it is an easy walk to the house. I recommend using the audio as you walk, noting the stopping points. Informative, lovely, and a bargain price.
