See the country’s biggest stadium, FNB Stadium, expanded for the 2010 World Cup. Learn about the community of Diep Kloof becoming integrated over the past few decades. Pass what was once the world’s largest hospital, Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, built during the Second World War. Just opposite sits one of the biggest and busiest taxi stands in Johannesburg, the Bara Taxi Rank.
See the Orlando Towers, one of the city symbols, and the Orlando Stadium. The latter was reportedly the first sports facility built specifically for black South Africans. Visit the Hector Pieterson Memorial to learn more about the Soweto Uprising of 1976.
Stop at Mandela House to learn more about the life story of South Africa’s former president. Mandela lived in this house, now a museum, from 1946-1962. The final stop on the Soweto tour is the Kliptown Open Air Museum in Walter Sisulu Square. This is where, in 1955, roughly 3,000 people gathered to adopt the Freedom Charter.
After transport back to Johannesburg, your minibus drops you off at Gold Reef City where the tour began.
