Overview

Take a day trip to Assisi and Cortona and discover these charming hilltop towns alongside a guide. Departing from Florence, travel first to Assisi, where you’ll visit the Convent of Santa Chiara, the Basilica of San Francesco, and hear about the life of St. Francis of Assisi. Pause for a peek inside Santa Maria degli Angeli church, believed to be a favorite spot of St. Francis. Then head to Cortona for some time to explore independently before returning to Florence.
  • Day trip to the hilltop towns of Assisi and Cortona from Florence
  • Learn about St Francis of Assisi and St Clare, who both lived in Assisi
  • Visit the Basilica of San Francesco and Convent of Santa Chiara on a guided walking tour of Assisi
  • Stop for a look inside the 9th-century church at Santa Maria degli Angeli
  • Enjoy an afternoon of free time in the Tuscan town of Cortona, setting of Under the Tuscan Sun
  • Sightsee around Cortona independently and look out for sights such as Palazzo Communale
Your tour will begin outside Santa Maria Novella Train Station, where you’ll hop aboard your coach with your guide and head into the region of Umbria. Stop first in the beautiful town of Assisi, made famous by its ties to St. Francis. Now known as Italy's patron saint, Francis left the wealth of his family behind in the 13th century to preach on Assisi’s streets.

Follow your guide by foot to the Basilica of San Francesco, which hosts Giotto’s famous frescoes depicting St. Francis’ life. Continue on to the Convent of Santa Chiara, dedicated to St. Clare, one of Francis’ first followers in Assisi.

Hop aboard your coach and drive to the outskirts of town to see Santa Maria degli Angeli, a 9th-century church where it’s said St. Francis came to worship. Explore the interior with your guide before making your way back to your coach.

Head next to Cortona, the charming setting for the popular film and memoir, Under the Tuscan Sun. Take some time to purchase lunch or explore the Palazzo Comunale and Santa Margherita Sanctuary, built in honor of Cortona’s patron saint.

After reuniting with your guide, travel back to central Florence to conclude your tour.

Please note: the order of the visits to Assisi and Cortona are subject to change on the day of your tour.

This tour tries to do too much in a day. The guide had a weird way of repeating himself constantly and yet never actually said much of value. Special guide in asissi was great!

Good tour. Florence traffic was terrible and took away a lot of time. Not much time left for Cortona, but Assisi was really the highlight. Guide for Assisi was very good, but tour did not give enough time to the Giotto frescoes. Tour guide was terrific (Julia?)

The tour guide on this tour was below par. She spoke english, Spanish and Italian all in the one sentence and was very very difficult to understand. Two other person besides myself had trouble keeping up with her walking speed, my husband spoke to her about this could she just slow down a bit but she took no notice therefore several things we couldn't see because of this walking speed. Most of the people on this trip were not young and she needs to accomodate everyone. I wouldn't recommend this company.

Loved visiting both towns. Would love to live in Cortona. Need to be in decent physical shape to walk up the hill into the town of Cortona. Once there, it is a true Italian village. Shops for food, wine, essentials, gifts, etc. Cafes and restaurants. Not very touristy. Where you can experience the culture and it's people. Loved it. Assisi was another great little town. Lots of tourists. The Basilica is beautiful. A must see. Our guide was great. Spoke a few languages. Very good English. Was very knowledgeable about the area and it's history. Great trip for the money.

Definitely needed more free time to explore each town. The guide at Assisi was a disappointment.

A very long day, with an unnecessary and unnecessarily long mid-morning stop at a cute but unspectacular lakefront village.
We had no time to stop in the village for quick shopping or looking, and the line to get in and out of the controlled area was way too long to contemplate going back after seeing Assisi. a pending papal visit was probably responsible for at least some of the delay.
Assisi was lovely, but a you're not allowed to take pics inside, and b our guide wasn't permitted to accompany us on that part of the tour - I think we lost quite a lot as a result.
Cortona was lovely - despite the afternoon rain - and less crowded. Overall, I preferred not to Assisi.
It was after dark by the time we returned to Florence.
