Itinerary

Day 1: arrival in Chiang Mai
If you fly into Chiang Mai, you’ll be picked up from the airport and transferred to your hotel. No activities planned today, so you can arrive at any time. Upon check-in, ask hotel reception for your welcome letter, which has information about your tour. The rest of your day is free for you to explore Chiang Mai at your leisure. Ask for dining recommendations or set out on foot (or tuk-tuk) to see some of the many beautiful temples in northern Thailand’s most vibrant city.

Overnight: Imperial Mae Ping Hotel in Chiang Mai

Day 2: Chiang Mai – Elephant Nature Park – Chiang Mai (B, L)
Set off early after breakfast with a scenic drive by minibus to the Elephant Nature Park, a sanctuary and rescue center for these majestic animals. Travel through the picturesque Mae Taeng Valley to the park, located approximately 37 miles (60 km) from Chiang Mai.

Upon arrival, an expert nature guide greets your small group and shares stories about the orphaned elephants and hundreds of other rescued animals that live at the sanctuary, including dogs, buffalo, cats, horses, pigs, monkeys and cows. Observe the free-roaming elephants, learn about their plight in Southeast Asia and efforts to protect them. Have an opportunity to feed the elephants fruit treats before enjoying your own lunch: a delicious buffet of Thai and international dishes.

Next, enjoy a refreshing activity: bath time for elephants at the river! After a safety briefing, a guide accompanies you and the elephants on the short walk to the river. Scrub and bathe a tame elephant if you don’t mind getting wet when the elephants splash around. If you prefer to stay dry, you can delight in watching their playful antics from the riverbank. After a full day at the Elephant Nature Park, return to Chiang Mai and enjoy the evening at your leisure.

Day 3: Chiang Mai (B)
Start early with a scenic ride by songthaew to the Kad Ton Payom flea market. Your guide purchases alms from the market to offer the monks — a Buddhist tradition that your guide explains. Next, enjoy a traditional breakfast such as rice soup, fried rice or grilled pork at the market. Then drive to Wat Umong, a 600-year-old temple known for its large painted pagoda and underground tunnel. Soak up the peaceful ambiance as the abbot speaks about Buddhist precepts. Afterward, continue to Wat Suan Dok to mingle with resident monks and learn about their way of life. Practice some basic meditation techniques and have the opportunity to make another alms offering.

Your tour concludes around midday, but you can depart from your accommodation at any time. With so much to do in Chiang Mai, you may want to spend a few more days exploring.
