Climb Table Mountain, the flat-topped mountain that dominates Cape Town’s skyline, on this full-day hiking tour. With a guide, you’ll follow Smuts Track from Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens to Maclear’s Beacon. Begin with an easy stroll along fynbos-strewn trails, then make the steeper ascent up Skeleton Gorge and into the forest that borders the mountain’s eastern flanks. At the top, you’ll have plenty of time to take in the unparalleled views of Table Bay and Robben Island before riding the cable car back down. Lunch, admission fees and hotel pickup and drop-off are all included.
I was standing in the lobby of the Hilton, drinking my take out coffee and chatting with the staff while I waited to leave for the all day hike. The previous day, a therapist (reflexology) took care of my feet for an hour to improve the blood circulation, but just in case I took two Advil.A driver and Lelo, the outgoing hiking guide picked me up at 8:30 am to challenge my mind and body on a strenuous all day hike on Table Mountain.I was dressed in layers; a long sleeve button shirt the dries quickly and whisks away the sweat, down vest with hood, a long thin rain coat with hood, fleece lined pantyhose, hiking pants, hiking boots, wool hat, hair braided to keep my neck cool and out of my eyes, the top of my feet where covered with a tape to prevent friction and blisters, a whistle, headlight, antibacterial hand wipes, a folded dry bag to protect my electronics, a foldaway backpack, just big enough to hold my clothing if I needed to remove the layers to stay cool and comfortable.I greeted a well-traveled couple from Canada and a photographer named Ken, who was there to take photos to update the companyâs website and it was his first time on this particular trail. There are many trails on Table Mountain, we started at the National Botanical Garden, named Kirstenbosch. The Garden has a variety of flowers, plants, and birds to photograph. The stone paths, landscaping and the tree lined walkway inspired me with new ideas for my garden. The grounds are not flat, hills and mountains compliment the garden. We walked on a dirt road, shared by mountain bikers, then we entered a trail that took us to Skeleton Gorge, Maclear Beacon and to the Upper Cable Station. There are lots of ladders to climb up, streams to cross by stepping on rocks and we had to squeeze between boulders to climb up. The trail is a photographerâs dream, lots of natural beauty to capture and share with others. The Upper Cable Station has a casual restaurant that serves a variety of food, wine and beer. The meal and beverage were included in the Hike fee. We chose to take the cable down instead of hiking down to protect our knees. The pleasant weather made this long hike a cherished memory. Lelo the hiking guide and Ken the photographer genuinely like their outdoor jobs. We all felt the pleasant energy of our group. The driver was waiting for us at the bottom of the Cable Station to return us to our hotels.
I’ve been to Cape Town 4 times previously but never had time to organize my hike of Table Mountain. I finally made time during this trip and was in awe!! Such an amazing hike, great challenge, with awesome views. My guide, Nombulelo, was the best ever!!! She provided excellent instructions and facts along the way. She always took time to accompany me to visit a local vineyard for lunch after the hike. Great conversation along such a scenic path from the gardens. Highly recommend!!

I was travelling alone and had a great time hiking up Tabletop mountain. The local tour guide 'Skeezo' of local tour operator Bike and Saddle Cape Town was really good company. It was his first time too in fact like for me too, but he seems to know what he was doing. Because it was my first hike ever, he managed the pace for me and took some mini-breaks along the way to the summit via Platteklip Gorge path. I had bad luck with the weather cloudy morning, misty at summit, so couldn't see the whole Cape Town landscape beyond the summit. Because of the bad weather the cable car wasn't operating so i climbed back down again via the same path. All in all it was a great experience!
