Begin with a wine tasting in Henderson Valley, then continue to the Waitakere Ranges, where more than 40,000 acres (16,000 hectares) of coastline and forest await you. Get elevated views of the reserve from the Arataki visitor center, explore the black-sand beaches of Piha and Karekare, and get close to the Karekare waterfalls. Then, enjoy an included lunch before finishing your tour with wine tastings at West Brook Wines and Kumeu River Wines.

  • Full-day tour of West Auckland, led by a guide
  • Visit the Waitakere Ranges on Auckland’s rugged west coast
  • Take in rain forest views from the Arataki visitor center and visit the Karekare waterfalls
  • Explore the vast, black-sand beaches of Piha and Karekare
  • Savor an included 1-course lunch served with tea or coffee at a local cafe

Following pickup from your central Auckland accommodation, you’ll travel by climate-controlled minibus to Henderson Valley, the heartland of Auckland’s wine industry. Here, visit Babich Wines and try a range of wine varietals grown on the Babich family’s vineyards in Hawkes Bay and Marlborough.

Continue to Auckland’s wild west coast, an area typified by volcanic beaches and dense rain forest. Drop in to the Arataki visitor center in the Waitakere Ranges for elevated views of the rain forest. Then, head to Piha, one of Auckland’s most famous black-sand beaches popular with swimmers and surfers.

After exploring the beach and enjoying a panoramic drive around the coastal community, you’ll head to Karekare beach, which features in the movie, The Piano. Walk along the sparkly black sands, and then continue into the Waitakeres to see the Karekare waterfalls.

Next, make the 1-hour journey through forest and farmland to the Provenance Café for an included lunch, served with tea or then. Then, close off the day with wine tastings at West Brook Wine in the Ararimu Valley and Kumeu River Wines, the latter of which is famed for its world-class chardonnay.

Your full-day tour concludes with a drop-off at your central Auckland accommodation.

We were one of two couples on this tour ... it was just the four of us with the tour guide/owner John McFarlane. Curiously, we took this tour in order to visit Piha and the Rainforest the other couple took it because of their interest in wine. We spent the morning visiting the natural sites, and the afternoon at the wineries. To John's credit, all of us had a fabulous time and ended the day feeling that we had received what we expected and more. It was our best tour while in Auckland. We have absolutely nothing negative to say about this tour.

A special word about the lunch. We have traveled a lot and ave come to expect a mediocre buffet style lunch whenever we take a tour. That was definitely NOT the case here. We went to a lovely restaurant at one of the wineries ... had a menu from which we could pick our choice of main courses ... wine was included ... and we were served by an actual waiter! What a delight.

John really is a lovely guy. I can't recommend him enough.
His passion for his job, his knowledge and background all serve to entertain and astound during the trip.
We lucked out and had a 2 person tour. The small tour size really made it great.
Good luck with everything John!

John's Tour was the best part of our 7 day Auckland tour. Very knowledgeable about wine and history. But John wises customizes the vast amount of information in hid disposal to suit the interests of his visits. Get out of Auckland and take this tour if you want to understand New Zealand.

I was hesitant to book this tour on here without any reviews but went ahead with it anyways and am certainly beyond happy that I did. John was our guide and he is seriously amazing and it was an incredible day out. He is so knowledgeable about New Zealand and taught us so much. He is friendly and professional and went out of his way to make sure we had a great tour. Everywhere we went was so picture perfect and the wine and his knowledge about wine and how it is made is also incredible. The lunch was also way better than what we expected to get - fresh, local, and good quality. If you want a day out seeing some spectacular views, sipping wine, eating a great lunch and receiving great service including learning so much about New Zealand than don't think twice and just book this tour. Thanks again John! - Erin and Steve
