What You Can Expect

Full-Day Tour of Athens, Acropolis and Cape Sounion with Lunch

Temple of Poseidon - Cape Sounio

After morning pickup at your hotel or other designated meeting point, climb aboard an air-conditioned coach equipped with Wi-Fi for a comfortable journey. Begin with a city sightseeing tour that takes you past some of Athens's most important contemporary monuments including the Panathinaikon Stadium (home of the first modern Olympic Games), Presidential Palace, National Library, Catholic Cathedral, and Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in front of Parliament House.

No visit to Athens would be complete without a stop at the mighty Acropolis that rises above the city. Walk among its sacred ancient monuments such as the Parthenon, Propylae, Temple of Athena Nike, and Erechtheion, and delve even deeper into the history of the UNESCO World Heritage site with an optional visit to the New Acropolis Museum.

Rest and recharge with an included lunch of typical Greek cuisine at the Amalia Hotel across from the beautiful National Gardens. In the afternoon, leave the bustle of the city behind and travel along scenic coastal roads past sea coves and beaches like Glyfada, Vouliagmeni, and Varkiza on the way to Cape Sounion. Here you'll be greeted by spectacular views of the Saronic Gulf and its many islands, with the ancient Temple of Poseidon towering above the Aegean Sea. Explore the archaeological site and learn about the many legends that surrounded it, including a story from The Odyssey in which Menelaus stops at the sanctuary during his return from Troy to bury his helmsman.

Relax on the return coach ride to Athens, where the full-day tour concludes back at your original departure point in the early evening.

The tour started a little chaotic when the bus was late. then the guide did not explain the process and what was to expect so we sat on a hot bus for some time while they coordinated all the passengers.
Once the tour got started it was really great. the lunch was amazing. and the afternoon tour to Cape Sounion was beautiful. My only issue is that we did not stay for the sunset. I wish that the afternoon tour started later and stayed for the sunset or stopped at a local beach area for people to walk around. otherwise it was good. VERY HOT.

This was a nice tour with a bus to the Acropolis with guide narrative of Athens along the way. The guide give some history but after a while I got lost in the names, dates, battles, and details. I just wanted to get to the top. We had over an hour at the top which was fine. Lunch was good and lots of food. The drive to Cape Sounion was about 90 minutes and you get a lot of history on the way. At the Temple of Poseidon there is a nice little restaurant to relax after exploring the temple. If I had to do it again I would do the Acropolis on my own after visiting the museum first but do the tour to Cape Sounion. Overall it was a good booking and the guides were all great.

This is a very good tour. Personally its best to choose the option with lunch when purchasing this tour. You can request to be picked up at your hotel within the city limits of Athens. Hotel Amalia is the meeting place for the bus if you choose otherwise. Hotel Amalia is a 4 star hotel which has a nice atmosphere. The morning will begin around 0845-0900 and last approximately until 1115. Acropolis Museum is an option as you will be asked if you would like to pay for this. I choose not to because The National Archaeological Museum in Athens houses some of the most important artifacts from a variety of archaeological locations around Greece from prehistory to late antiquity.

Since I choose not attend the extra charge of the Acropolis Museum, Hotel Amalia prepares a beautiful lunch for you. Afterwards, you will have approximately 3 hours of free time if you are doing Cape Sounion in the afternoon. I walked to the Mitropoleos Square which only takes less than ten minutes to walk. Here you can purchase many different items for negotiable prices. This is one of the better places for shopping in Athens for tourists. Many times at the tour locations, the prices are slightly higher.

Cape Sounion is noted for its Temple of Poseidon, one of the major monuments of the Golden Age of Athens. Its remains are perched on the headland, surrounded on three sides by the sea. Cape Sounion will depart approximately 1445 from Hotel Amalia. This was the highlight of the trip in my opinion. It takes about one hour to drive. Most of the driving is along the coastline because Cape Sounion is located on the southernmost tip of the Attic peninsula in Greece. Once you arrive ensure you walk the entire grounds. Dont just focus on the Temple of Poseidon. You can take beautiful pictures if you walk the steps/trails.

Excellent tour. Our guide very knowledgeable. Well timed as we were able to see the changing of the guard at the Parliament. Plenty of time to wander around the Acropolis. The Parthenon is a must see. New Acropolis museum added to the significance of the sights. Cape Sounion with temple of Poseidon completed the trip.

This tour was awesome! The morning tour was phenomenal and we were able to see so much and the tour guide was a wealth of knowledge. However the tour guide in the evening to Cape Sounion wasn’t the best but the views and pictures there were gorgeous! Overall a great tour and highly recommend!

Guides did an amazing job of keeping us together and moving smoothly. Very informative guides fielded questions and taught us a lot about all the sites. They did a great job of squeezing a lot of important sites into one day! The bus was comfortable and this trip was organized very well. I recommend upgrading to the museum like we did. Its definitely worth it!
