Amsterdam Walking Tour (Day 1)Begin your 2-hour afternoon walking tour at the Damrak. Stroll with a history-savvy guide past historical landmarks including Maison Descartes, the Begjinhof, the Royal Palace and Dam Square as you learn about Amsterdam’s storied past, spanning more than 800 years.
Hear tales of the city’s humble beginnings as a small settlement on the Amstel River, and learn how it developed into today's metropolis since the Golden Age. You’ll get a comprehensive overview as you meander down side streets and explore major areas including the Jordaan district and the infamous Red Light District, showcasing Amsterdam’s provocative side.
Midway through your tour, stop to sample typical Dutch specialties including herring, cheese, waffles and jenever (Dutch gin).
Wander along the UNESCO World Heritage-listed canals and by the old city gates, Nieuwmarkt (New Market) and De 9 Straatjes (The 9 Streets). Explore the busy pedestrian shopping street of Kalverstraat and the bicycle-clad street of Rokin.
View, too, the exteriors of the Anne Frank House, Rembrandt House Museum and Amsterdam Museum. Consider returning to visit them (own expense) after your tour concludes back at the Damrak.
Zaanse Schans Windmills, Marken and Volendam Half-Day Trip from Amsterdam (Day 2)The next day, board a luxury coach at the Damrak and relax on the scenic drive out of Amsterdam and into the Dutch countryside. En route to several North Holland villages, listen to your audio guide and learn about the passing sights.
Your first stop is Volendam, a quaint fishing village where old-world women still wear traditional Dutch clothing. Include a visit to a local cheese factory for a demonstration and a sampling of its dairy production.
Take the 20-minute ferry boat to Marken, another traditional fishing town that was once an island. Admire its characteristic wooden stilt houses, and stop by a local shoemaker to watch the production of Holland’s iconic wooden shoes.
Continue by coach to Zaanse Schans, a pretty town on the Zaan River famous for its well-preserved 17th-century windmills. Marvel at these emblems of traditional Dutch life and see the historical shipyard.
Once you’ve captured this postcard-perfect scene on camera, your 5.5-hour tour ends with the return drive to central Amsterdam in the evening.

Save the countryside for when you visit Holland. Unfortunately, this Half-Day trip from Amsterdam was not enjoyable. It was by far the worst Viator tour I've ever paid for. I would not recommend it to travelers - waste of time spend more time exploring Amsterdam. We were put on an overly crowded tour bus where our tour guide continually repeated everything he said in three different languages. At each stop on the tour, our guide slowly lead the group around, but failed to give much valuable insight or information at the different spots of interest. Normally my tour guides through Viator bookings are fabulous and have very interesting stories/facts/history to relay to the tour group. Furthermore, the cheese making and clog making demonstrations seemed more like quick sales pitches more than anything. You do see windmills at the beginning of the tour which make for some good pictures the best photos you'll get the whole tour, but I was disappointed that the little town the windmills are in was very saturated and seemed more of a tourist trap more than anything.
