What You Can Expect

Whale Watching from Downtown Akureyri

Fluke of a Humpback

Book your desired boat departure time, and make your own way to the harbor in downtown Akureyri.

Then, board your spacious ship, Iceland’s only high-speed, specially modified whale watching vessel, and make use of the provided thermal overalls, raincoats, or blankets. The ship accommodates up to 200 passengers and provides unobstructed views of the seas from cinema-style viewing platforms.

As your ship sails, admire the rugged coastline of Eyjafjord, Iceland’s longest fjord. Drink in the surrounding, snow-capped mountains, and chat to the whale watching guides to learn about the humpbacks that visit the area. The summer sun brings a cornucopia of marine food into the fjord, triggering a feeding frenzy from these larger-than-life mammals.

Learn about the lifecycles of the humpbacks as your ship uses its speed to reach far and deep parts of the fjord, leaving no likely viewing area unexplored.

Scan the seas for whales, and with luck, enjoy some sightings of the mammals as they swim and breach in the waters. You’ll find ample indoor and outdoor seating for viewing the sea in comfort, plus a bar and café for refreshments (own expense).

After three hours, your cruise ends when you disembark at Akureyri.

Loved it! We took the afternoon tour spent the morning walking around the shopping district. User friendly no vehicles.
The whale watch was so much fun. We saw several youthful whales 3 or four were having fun hanging out with each other. Our Captain, tour guide and crew were fantastic, friendly, professional, and so informative. Do make use of the coveralls they will reall keep you comfortable.
Iceland does not have the same restrictions as many countries however, our Captain was very aware of the locations of the whales and kept a very respectful distance close but mot threatening. We got lots of great photos.
I recommend this tour company highly. Go, have a great experience and fun!

As we were on a cruise ship we were a bit concerned how we would find the boat for the trip. We shouldn't have worried, the office was few hundred yards away from where the cruise ship docked. A good idea is to arrive about 1/2 hour before the sailing time to ensure you can get a good seat up top. We had warm clothing on but still took advantage of the suits they supply on board. The crew member guide was extremely good and was on the look out for whales constantly. We were very lucky to have many sightings on our trip. Other passengers had gone on a trip with the same company the day before in Reykjavik and had not seen any whales. The company allow you to go again at no cost if this happens. It was a 3 hour trip and excellent value.

It was a wonderful trip with exciting, memorable sightings of whales. The trip leaders gave lots of interesting information which added to the wonder. we were lucky enough to see about 13 whales. My advice is do not be so intent in getting the best photos as you can be so busy taking pictures that you miss the full impact of the sight of the whales and their magnificent movements.
