Discover the rustic beauty of northern Iceland’s Diamond Circle. Your full-day tour begins with morning pickup from your Akureyri hotel in a minivan and a scenic drive north into the remote, rugged landscape.
Stop first at Godafoss, the ‘waterfall the gods,’ and admire the icy cascade that flows over a semicircle of jagged cliffs. Visit the nearby volcanic Lake Mývatn and the jagged peaks of Mt Námafjall. Learn the history of this wildly active geothermal area as you pass by the steaming vents, dormant craters and bubbling mud pits of Hverir.
Journey through Vatnajökull National Park, where you can watch the 144-foot (44-meter) Dettifoss waterfall empty into an ice-covered ravine. Continue on to other natural wonders like the Jökulsárgljúfur glacial canyon, Vesturdalur valley, Hljóðaklettar’s echoing cliffs and the towering, crescent-shaped Ásbyrgi canyon.
Revisit civilization with a stop in the village of Húsavík for lunch at a local café (own expense). Afterwards, if you are touring between early June and late July, enjoy an extra stop at Tjörnes peninsula to view the cliff-side nests of wild puffins. At the end of your day in the Icelandic wilderness, relax on the return drive to Akureyri, where you’ll be dropped off back at your hotel in the evening.
