The perfect combination of safari park and theme park, West Midland Safari Park opened in spring 1983 and is dedicated to the conservation of some of the planet’s rarest animals. The 81-hectare (200-acre) landscaped park is a paradise for families,
with daily sea lion shows and reptile encounters, animal feeding sessions plus safari tours. These self-drive adventures head off across the African savannah and through the Asian jungle on a 6.4-km (four-mile) journey spotting rhinos, elephants, tigers
and lions, ostriches and endangered one-horned rhinos. Attractions also include entertaining and educational discovery trails, a penguin cove, awesomely lifelike animatronic dinosaurs, a hippo lake, the African Village petting farm and comical meercats.
An adventure playground full of gentle carousels and magic carpet rides is aimed at tiny toddlers, with more radical thrills to be found in the Adventure Theme Park, where crowd-pullers include Black Fly gravity ride and the Venom Tower Drop. Height restrictions apply on some of the rides and there are plenty of catering options scattered around the park.
