Keats-Shelley House Tours

The Keats-Shelley Memorial House is part memorial to a former resident and part museum dedicated to a group of poets. English poet John Keats moved into the house, which is at the base of the Spanish Steps in Rome, in late 1820, suffering from tuberculosis. He died in the house in February of 1821.

While the objects in the room at the time of Keats’ death were burned after he died (as per regulations at the time), a replica of his bed is in the room where he died, along with his death mask.

The rest of the house museum contains works and artifacts by a group of Romantic poets, many of whom knew each other and spent time in Italy at the same time. Percy Bysshe Shelley is the other poet whose name is on the house, though he never lived in it (when he live in Rome, he lived nearby). Other writers whose letters, art, and other objects are on display in the house include Byron, Robert and Elizabeth Browning, and Oscar Wilde.

Any tours in Rome that include the Spanish Steps will include at least a reference to the Keats-Shelley House, as it’s the building on the right side of the base of the steps as you stand at the bottom. The museum inside the house is quite small, and easy to visit.

Practical Info

Keats lived in the Rome house with an artist friend, Joseph Severn, whose portraits of the poet hang in various places around the museum.
