House of Augustus Tours

One of the first buildings visitors see on the Palatine Hill in Rome is the House of Augustus, the home where Caesar Augustus lived while he was Emperor. The house, also known as Domus Augusti, was built in the early 1st century BC. Its main draw are its fresco-lined walls: they’re remarkably well-preserved, and feature trompe l’oeil landscapes and theater scenes. Some of the best examples of frescoes are in the adjacent House of Livia, Augustus’ favorite wife.

To visit, you’ll need to buy a ticket in advance that includes the Palatine Hill as well as a specialized tour granting access to the House of Augustus and the House of Livia.

Practical Info

The House of Augustus is only open to guided tours booked in advance. Tour times vary, though demand is much higher in the summer. Be sure to book your tour ahead of time to make sure you get a spot.
