Laughter and terrified shrieks mingle with the scent of fried chicken, funnel cakes and chlorine at this amusement and water park outside of Allentown Pennsylvania. Here, five thrill coasters – including the inverted Possessed and Steel Force with a 205-foot drop – whip sugar-crazed families and teenagers through the sky with view of other park attractions including a walking trail home to 30 life-sized animatronic dinosaurs, the 10-story Demon Drop and the more than three dozen slides, pools and lazy rivers of the attached Wildwater Kingdom.
In addition to the satisfying adrenaline machines, family friendly rides are also bountiful. Race cars, a Ferris Wheel and the tilt-a-whirl allow parents and younger children to enjoy rides together and the park’s Planet Snoopy has 16 Charlie Brown-themed rides for little ones including the Linus Launcher where kids can fly in circles and the Woodstock Express wooden coaster.
The attached waterpark is a major draw in the height of summer – its 355,000 gallon wave pool simulates the sea and cabana rentals are a popular way to while away an afternoon. To beat the crowds throughout the park, arrive early on a weekday and start with the rides in the back first.
Dorney Park opens the first weekend in May and closes at the end of October – in the shoulder seasons its open weekends only. The Wildwater Kingdom Park is open from Memorial Day through Labor Day. General admission includes most park rides, live shows and the Wildwater Kingdom park when it is open. The Dinosaurs Alive section of the park requires additional entrance fees. A regular ticket is $55 for adults or $38 for kids at the gate; discounts are available if purchased in advance online. Fast Lane passes that allow visitors to skip lines on popular rides in the park at at five attractions in Wildwater Kingdom are also available.
