Montreal Insectarium Tours

When was the last time you (willingly) surrounded yourself with some of the world’s smallest, most common creatures? Montreal’s natural history museum features insects not just from the area, but from around the globe. It’s one of the largest insectariums in the world, and remains the biggest in North America (so there are plenty of bugs to be seen.) In total there are more than 250,000 specimens in the collection, including 100+ live insects.

The Montreal Insectarium allows visitors interact with insects with all their senses, from the noises they make, to the colors they exhibit, and the habitats they create. It’s fascinating to see the diversity of insects that inhabit different parts of the planet. Leaf cutter ants can be viewed building their home in real time.

The world of insects is particularly popular with children, who can also play in the “Buzzground" discovery area. The museum itself is cleverly shaped like an insect, appearing as one from an aerial view.

Practical Info

The insectarium is part of the Montréal Space for Life, which is considered one of Montreal’s best sites. It’s located in the Hochelaga-Maisonneuve neighborhood of Montreal, on Rue Sherbrooke. You can walk there from the Biodome as well. The nearest metro stop is Pie-IX.

Open daily from 9 am to 9 pm, admission costs $19.75 for adults and $10 for children ages 5-17. Entrance to the nearby Botanical Garden is included.
