Gritty, historic and down-to-earth, Liverpool is one of England’s most important port cities. There’s maritime history to discover, cultural history in museums and galleries throughout the city, the musical legacy of the Beatles, and the sporting icons of football and horse racing.

Day One: Liverpool City Center
To get to know what makes Liverpool tick, start your exploration of the city at Albert Dock on the River Mersey waterfront. Museums and attractions in this revitalized area of warehouses and docks tell the story of Liverpool’s development as a port and departure point for migrants departing for the New World. It’s also the venue for the multimedia Beatles Story museum, and cutting-edge modern art at the Tate Liverpool gallery. Then catch some fresh air from the deck of a boat on a ferry trip across the River Mersey, or by taking a stroll along the waterfront promenade at Pier Head.

Day Two: Beatles’ Liverpool
You don’t have to be a music fan to appreciate the sights on a Beatles tour of Liverpool. The fun and interesting tours highlight the changes Liverpool has experienced over the past 70 years, from the wartime damage of the Blitz to Liverpool’s triumph as host of the European Capital of Culture in 2008. There are so many Beatle-themed tours to choose from, including half-day bus tours and walking tours. Highlights include the National Trust-run former homes of John Lennon and Paul McCartney, Penny Lane and Strawberry Field, and the Cavern Club where the Beatles played in the early 1960s.

Day Three: Liverpool Museums
Liverpool is a major cultural powerhouse, crammed with museums and galleries. In the city center, the Walker Art Gallery showcases art from the 14th century to postmodernism, while the Tate Liverpool hosts contemporary installations. Next door to the Walker, the World Museum shines a light on natural history and science, including an aquarium and planetarium. The International Slavery Museum at Albert Dock explores historical and contemporary aspects of slavery, while the highly regarded Merseyside Maritime Museum focuses on the experience of emigration from the port of Liverpool, and has a poignant display of objects retrieved from the doomed Titanic.
