Outdoor Adventures from Kathmandu

63 reviews
When in Nepal, it’s hard to miss the Himalayan mountain range, which tempts travelers to experience its grandeur on an adventure tour. If your idea of adventure involves communing with nature and experiencing the great outdoors, you have several options from Kathmandu.

Trekking
When it comes to mountain trekking, few places on the planet rival Nepal. Even if you are not ready to tackle the world’s highest peak, you can still make an expedition to one of Mount Everest’s base camps. Multi-day guided itineraries take trekkers through Kathmandu Valley to sites such as Changu Narayan (Nepal’s oldest temple), Nagarkot, and Shivapuri National Park.

Day Hiking
You can enjoy the Himalayan scenery Nepal is famous for without embarking on a multi-day hike. Day hikes from Kathmandu might take you through Shivapuri National Park to the Nagi Gompa Buddhist monastery, to the temple of Changu Narayan (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), or to Nagarkot to see the sun set over the snow-capped mountains.

Cycling
Charming Nepalese villages dot the countryside just outside of Kathmandu. On a guided cycling tour, you pedal along scenic roads to visit historic towns such as Kirtipur and Chobar while learning about local life and Newari culture—with stellar views of the Kathmandu Valley along the way.

Whitewater Rafting
Many travelers see the Himalayas from a hiking path; far fewer see them from the water. Thrill seekers can tackle the rapids of Trishuli River during a whitewater rafting adventure. Even novice rafters can participate, while picking up tips from a certified river guide.

Bungee Jumping
For the ultimate thrill, head to the Nepal-Tibet border to take the leap off the 545-foot (166-meter) steel suspension bridge spanning Bhote Koshi River in Tatopani.
