Western Wall Tunnel Tours

The Western Wall Tunnel in Jerusalem offers a behind-the-scenes-exploration of one of the most significant holy sites in Judaism—the Western (or Wailing) Wall. An underground continuation of the popular prayer site, the Western Wall Tunnel provides worshipers and visitors an unique perspective of the ancient, limestone wall, exposing its full length and portions that were buried until the 19th century.

Running adjacent to the wall and underneath the buildings in Jerusalem’s Old City, a guided tour through the Western Wall Tunnel provides insight into its architecture and uncovers some of the city's most sacred sites. Nearly 164 feet (50 meters) into the near-third-of-a-mile-long (440-meter) tunnel, visitors will encounter Warren’s Gate, which is the closest point to the Holy of Holies. A small synagogue now stands outside the gate. Visitors will also see the Western Stone, thought to be one of the heaviest objects ever lifted by human beings without powered machines, weighing in at an astounding 551 tons (500 metric tons).

While the tunnel can only be visited via guided tour, there are options for doing so tailored to every traveler. History-buffs can visit the adjacent Jewish history museum, the Chain of Generations Center, with a combined ticket to the tunnel; first-time visitors can take in both Old and New Jerusalem on a city tour including stops at the Western Wall Tunnel as well as modern attractions; and families or small groups can enjoy a private, full-day tour of the Old City with a personal guide and custom-made itinerary.

Practical Info

Getting there
Enter the Western Wall Tunnel from HaGai Street in Jerusalem’s Old City. Entrance into the tunnels is on the northern side of the Western Wall plaza. To reach the site, take the bus to the Western Wall stop (buses 1, 3, 51, 83, 333 or 746) or choose a guided tour with round-trip transportation, including hotel pickup and drop-off.

The tunnel is accessible only by guided tour and must be booked in advance. Admission costs NIS 30 for adults; NIS 50 for a combined Chain of Generations Center and tunnel tour; and NIS 15 for children younger than 18, seniors and people with disabilities.

Opening hours
The Western Wall Tunnel is open to guided tours Sunday to Thursday from 7am until late; Friday from 7am to noon; and Saturday evening by reservation only.

Helpful Information
Prepare for up to a 90-minute tour in the tunnel. There are no restrooms inside, and the third-of-a-mile path consists of a slight uphill walk through occasionally tight spaces. This attraction may be problematic for people with claustrophobia. Photos are permitted inside the tunnel.

Old City Jerusalem, where many of the historic sites are located, is a great place to walk around, with no cars and plenty of streets. Allow for time to explore outside of your tour, but bring a map with you as this area of the city does not contain signage.
